The Gemini virtual assistant on Android is reportedly set to receive new features, expanding its capabilities. Initially introduced as an AI-powered alternative to Google Assistant, the Gemini chatbot could handle tasks like answering queries, generating text, and web searches. However, its integration with third-party apps was limited, reducing its overall utility. Now, the tech giant is changing that with extensions, allowing Gemini to connect to more apps, including WhatsApp and Spotify.
According to a report from Android Authority, these new capabilities were found in the beta version of the Google app for Android (15.40.31.29) by tipster AssembleDebug. Although not yet rolled out to beta testers, the feature appears to be in development. Upon activation, a new prompt reportedly appears, explaining that Google Assistant’s actions are being replaced by Gemini Extensions. These extensions allow Gemini to perform tasks such as selecting a contact for calls or messages, as long as the Gemini app activity is enabled.
The app also tracks which app users prefer for calling or texting a specific contact and uses that data to automatically select the preferred app by default. This setting can be changed, and individual extensions can be turned off through the activity menu.
As per the report, the tipster successfully activated the WhatsApp extension. It allows users to send messages to contacts via voice commands, similar to Google Assistant. The Gemini interface displays an app card that users can click to open the app and view messages. The extension also enables message editing before sending and supports voice calls.
Regarding Spotify, the extension works for both free and Premium users, allowing them to prompt Gemini to play specific songs. After executing the command, a Spotify app card appears, which users can tap to directly access the song within the app.
