Huawei Technologies has introduced a revolutionary $2,800 tri-fold smartphone, aiming to steal the spotlight from Apple just hours after the iPhone 16 launch.
The Chinese tech giant unveiled its Mate XT, a smartphone that folds in three ways, at a launch event in Shenzhen, China's tech hub. According to Huawei's website, the device has already attracted over 4 million pre-orders—without requiring a deposit.
The Mate XT is packed with advanced AI features, including text summarization, translation, and image editing, all powered by Huawei’s in-house Kylin chips. It boasts a 10.2-inch display and folds down to just 3.6mm, making it the world’s slimmest foldable phone. Available in red and black, the device also comes with a pocket-sized detachable keyboard.
The launch of the Mate XT coincides with Apple’s iPhone 16 release, which is set to hit stores on September 20. While Huawei’s tri-fold design showcases impressive technological innovation, analysts suggest that its steep price and production limitations may restrict its market appeal. However, the launch reinforces Huawei’s role as a leader in cutting-edge technology and a significant challenger to Apple, particularly in the Chinese market where AI capabilities are in high demand.
With Huawei commanding 42% of China’s foldable phone market and surpassing Samsung in global foldable sales, this launch highlights the company’s dominance despite ongoing U.S. sanctions. While the high price may limit widespread adoption, the tri-fold smartphone is seen as a testament to Huawei’s technological prowess and innovation.
