Ghost of Tsushima, the critically acclaimed action-adventure game from Sucker Punch, is getting an exciting sequel. During Sony's State of Play event on Tuesday, the studio revealed "Ghost of Yotei," introducing a new protagonist and a fresh setting. This time, players will follow Atsu, a female hero, as she embarks on a journey through the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei in Northern Japan during the early 1600s. The game is set to launch exclusively on PS5 in 2025.
At the State of Play event, Sucker Punch dropped a trailer showcasing both gameplay and in-game cinematics for "Ghost of Yotei." Set in 1603, over 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, the game takes players to a new region in Japan—Mount Yōtei, a volcanic peak in the northern area once known as Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido).
Although few details about the setting have been shared, players can expect a vast open-world environment with Mount Yōtei as the central landmark. “In 1603, this area was outside the rule of Japan, and filled with sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras, and unexpected dangers. It's a far cry from the organized samurai clans who lived in Tsushima, and it's the setting for an original story we can't wait to tell,” Sucker Punch explained in a PlayStation blog post.
The sequel introduces a new lead, replacing Ghost of Tsushima’s Jin Sakai. In the trailer, Atsu is depicted wielding an uchigatana, a shamisen, a chained weapon, and a rifle. Sucker Punch confirmed that the game would introduce new weapons, mechanics, and refined gameplay over its predecessor.
Atsu is also shown with a wolf companion, suggesting deeper interaction with wildlife. She dons the Ghost mask and a straw hat, adding to her unique character design. Commenting on the shift from Jin Sakai and Tsushima, Sucker Punch said, “To create something fresh but familiar, we looked beyond Jin Sakai's story and the island of Tsushima, and shifted our focus to the idea of the Ghost instead. At Sucker Punch we love origin stories, and we wanted to explore what it could mean to have a new hero wearing a Ghost mask, and uncovering a new legend.”
The trailer highlighted significant graphical enhancements, with Ghost of Yotei being the first Sucker Punch game developed exclusively for the PS5. The team promises a world that feels more immersive than ever.
More details about the gameplay and story of "Ghost of Yotei" will be revealed in the coming months. The game is set to launch exclusively for PS5 in 2025.
